The Complete Family Heritage Guide to Rajasthan
Rajasthan is a state in India which offers everything from amazing forts, spectacular palaces, arts and crafts, great food, and the desert experience. We wanted to explore some of the UNESCO heritage sites and forts in India. And being heritage lovers, Rajasthan was one of our top picks as we started to venture to the northern part of the country.
Each street in Rajasthan is a heaven for art lovers. That’s why we have been to Rajasthan thrice so far, and we have still not completed the length and breadth of the state. As we kept going back, one thing became clear. The state did not just have forts, but some real magic could be found in the other heritage sites, be it Gaitore, Mandore gardens or just the streets of the cities.
But, how do you chase the sublime heritage of the Rajput kings while navigating crowded pathways and steep fortress walls with a little kid in tow? This is our complete family heritage guide to Rajasthan. We believe these places are foundational experiences, and we refuse to let logistics stand in the way. So, we dove in, choosing depth over speed, and planning just enough to ensure we could truly absorb this incredible state.

Forts and UNESCO Sites of Rajasthan
The Hill Forts of Jaipur and the Tunnel Walk
The sheer size and complexity of these hill forts—whether in Jaipur or near Udaipur—represent the pinnacle of Rajput defense and royal living. Visiting them requires specific logistical planning, which we break down here.
- Amer Fort and Jaigarh: The core experience here is the connection. We broke down the essential logistics of the Amer to Jaigarh tunnel walk, which provides a unique historical perspective and is an adventure in itself. We share the practical tips for making this hike manageable for young legs.
- Kumbhalgarh Fort: The Western Wall: A stunning day trip option. Known for its massive, encircling walls (often called the ‘Great Wall of India’), visiting Kumbhalgarh is about grasping the incredible scale of Rajput defense. The views and the experience of exploring such a massive structure made this a highlight of our trip. We detail how we fit this essential site into our Udaipur plans.
- The Royal Final Rest (Jaipur Chhatriyans): A beautiful, quiet space offering respite from the city’s hustle. It’s an opportunity to see the royal family’s traditions and architecture in a more contemplative setting. I can to this day close my eyes and relive the calm we felt that day. Do visit the Gaitore and Maharaniyon ki chattriyans.
