Navigating Singapore MRT: Best Ways to Pay & Tourist Hacks

Updated on March 9, 2026

Contents

Singapore has an extensive train network that connects different parts of the country. The rail network is also well-integrated with the bus network for last-mile connectivity. Administered by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), this system is the most efficient way to explore the island.

Understanding the Network: MRT vs. LRT

There are two different types of train networks in Singapore, operated by SMRT Corporation Ltd. and SBS Transit.

    • Mass Rapid Transit (MRT): There are six color-coded lines: East-West, North-South, North-East, Circle, Downtown, and Thomson-East Coast. Each MRT line has at least 2 interchange stations.
    • Light Rapid Transit (LRT): These are automated people movers with rubber wheels connecting Bukit Panjang, Sengkang, and Punggol.

How to Pay for Your Trips: Which Option is Right for You?

Since 2022, single-use tickets are no longer available. You must use a digital payment method at the turnstiles.

Contactless Bank Cards & Mobile Wallets

Contactless bank cards (Mastercard, Visa, and Amex) are accepted modes of payment. These cards must support NFC payments, and for overseas travelers, international transactions must be enabled. Contactless mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay, and Singtel Dash are also supported.

    SimplyGo EZ-Link Cards

The EZ-Link card remains a popular option. We bought our EZ-Link card at a 7-11 and used it for both buses and trains, as well as at convenience stores.

    • Where to buy: 7-11s or MRT stations.
    • Recharging: Ticketing machines at MRT stations accept cash (no change given!) or you can recharge at 7-11s (a small convenience fee applies).
    • Checking Balance: Use the kiosks at MRT stations or an NFC-capable mobile phone with the SimplyGo App (which replaced older third-party readers in 2026).

    SimplyGo Singapore Tourist Pass

SimplyGo Singapore Tourist Pass is another popular option if your itinerary relies on public transport. There are multiple pass options that you can check out here.

    • There’s also a collectable Singapore Tourist Pass charm, available in 1-day and 3-day options.
    • The duration and validity of the one-day passes are from the first usage until the end of the day’s public transport services.
    • Multi-day passes must be used on consecutive days.
    • Passes are applicable only for public bus, LRT and MRT services. Premium services of bus and train networks are excluded from the applicability of the passes. Tourist passes can be bought in these locations

Critical Tips: How to Avoid Double-Charges

Using the same payment mode for tapping in and tapping out is the best way to avoid double-charges. Here are the specific LTA rules to keep in mind:

    • Time Limit: Maximum journey time must not be more than 2 hours.
    • Transfer Limits: A maximum of 5 transfers is allowed across the lines.
    • Transfer Duration: 45 minutes between train and bus; 15 minutes between different train stations (relevant for tap-out interchanges).
    • No Loop Backs: Exit and re-entry at the same station is not allowed

Remember this bus Rule: Your current bus service must not be the same as your previous one. Else it will be considered a separate trip.

    Planning Your Journey

To plan your route or estimate fares, use the MyTransport Singapore app (available on iOS and Android) or the LTA portal. These tools are essential for navigating the interchanges, some of which may require you to tap out of one line and tap into another.

The “Experience”: Art, Music, and Chess

Many of the MRT and LRT stations had interesting exhibits for the public to interact with. Some of them dealt with the topic of fine art exhibitions. Others had musical instruments such as a harp, upright piano, etc., which the public is encouraged to responsibly use. Sharing these installations/musical instruments with fellow passengers creates a nice atmosphere for impromptu jamming sessions.

    • Art & Exhibits: Many stations feature interesting exhibits, including fine art displays.
    • Impromptu Jamming: You’ll find musical instruments like harps and upright pianos that the public is encouraged to use responsibly.
    • Station Games: Since 2025, giant chess sets have been installed at the Bras Basah and Botanic Gardens stations, creating a wonderful atmosphere for passengers.

Overall, the local train (LRT and MRT services) and public bus services are integrated well in Singapore. They are punctual and connect most of the tourist points of interest all over the country. Public transport (train and bus services) is a worthwhile consideration when planning your travel around Singapore.

    What Other Travelers Ask

Yes. Contactless bank cards from Mastercard, Visa, and Amex are accepted, provided they support NFC payments. If you are an overseas traveler, ensure international transactions are enabled on your card.

EZ-Link cards can be purchased at any 7-Eleven or MRT station.

You can top up at ticketing machines inside MRT stations or at 7-Eleven stores. There might be a small convenience fee that is added.

It depends on how heavily you plan to use public transport. We did feel it was very very helpful as we used public transport throughout our trip.
