In the heart of Imphal lies the historic Kangla Fort, a treasure trove of tales and a testament to the rich heritage of the region. Our visit to Manipur and to Kangla fort was a journey through time, exploring the facets of this ancient stronghold.
Getting There & The Grand Entrance
Approaching the fort, we first encountered a moat that encircles the stronghold, creating a sense of mystique—a protective embrace for the wonders within.
As we crossed the threshold through the Western Gate, we were greeted by a striking bronze statue of Raja Nara Singh (Meidingu Nara Singh). Mounted on a Manipuri pony with a sword drawn, he stands as a symbol of the valor that defined Manipur’s rulers.
The wooden entrance to the fort, meticulously restored, added a touch of rustic charm. The craftsmanship spoke of bygone eras and the enduring spirit of the place.

The Royal Boatyard: Hijagang
Our journey continued to the Hijagang (from Hija meaning royal and Gang meaning boat). This historically significant boatyard houses:
- Hiyang Hirel: Two beautifully crafted royal boats used for important religious ceremonies.
- Tanna Hee: Two commoners’ boats used for daily transportation. This site provides a unique glimpse into the maritime heritage and the intricate artistry of Manipur.
Spiritual Sites & Mythical Guardians
Within the fort, the Sanamahi Temple (dedicated to the deity Pakhangba) serves as a spiritual oasis. Its intricate architecture and serene surroundings offer a place for quiet contemplation.
Nearby, you will encounter the Khanglasa—a pair of mythical dragon statues standing proudly in front of the Kangla Uttara Shanglen. These guardians signify the spiritual importance of the indigenous Sanamahism tradition.
The Legend of Meidana
Keep an eye out for a specific boulder within the fort. According to folklore, the malevolent monster Meidana (a serpent-like being) was crushed under this stone, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Historically, this boulder also served a practical purpose for secondary burials, where remains were laid to dry.
The Citadel: Sanggai Yumpham & The Ruins
As we explored further, we reached the Sanggai Yumpham, a fortified citadel that once served as the royal residence and administrative heart of the Manipur Kingdom. Nearby lie the poignant ruins of the Old Govindajee Temple. Once a grand structure dedicated to Lord Krishna, it was compromised by earthquakes, leaving only pillars as a reminder of its former glory.
The Three Museums of Kangla
To truly unravel Manipur’s past, visit the three dedicated museums:
- Archaeological Museum: Features traditional costumes, weapons, jewelry, and manuscripts.
- Kangla Sha: Focused specifically on royal history and the lives of the kings.
- Kangla Museum: Details the transformation of the fort itself from a military stronghold to a cultural symbol.
Nature & Local Flavors
Amidst the history, we stumbled upon a herbal garden—a living tribute to traditional medicinal practices—and the tombs of erstwhile rulers.
We concluded our day at the fort’s cafeteria. It was a fitting end to indulge in the local flavors:
- Red Tea: Delicious and aromatic.
- Chak Hao: A unique black rice pudding that is a must-try Manipuri delicacy.
Kangla Fort stands not just as a relic, but as a living testament to the resilience of Manipur. Each corner whispers stories of triumphs and tribulations, connecting the present to a storied past.
