Getting there
Known locally as the Kaipholangso waterfall, this natural wonder encapsulates not only the scenic beauty of the region but also the resilient spirit of the community that calls it home.
Our adventure commenced with a picturesque drive along village roads, winding through a tapestry of greenery untouched by the rapid pace of modern life. The tranquility of the surroundings hinted at a lifestyle intricately connected with nature, where the daily rhythm of the community resonates with the pulse of the land.
As we approached the waterfall, our path led us to a toll gate, an unassuming checkpoint manned by the diligent members of the Karbi Anglong village committee.
Beyond its apparent function as a toll collection point, this gate served a dual purpose — the funds garnered contributed to the upkeep of the location, ensuring its pristine charm endured, and simultaneously supported the welfare initiatives of the local village.
Notably absent along the journey was the reliance on the electric grid, underscoring the community’s self-sufficiency. Upon passing the gate, a designated parking lot awaited us, marking the beginning of a 3-kilometer trek that would lead us deeper into the heart of nature’s sanctuary.
In a world often marked by dependency on modern conveniences. this aspect of the village showcased a harmonious coexistence with nature, where sustainability was a way of life.
Trail to the waterfall
The trail unfolded through paths intricately crisscrossed by babbling streams, providing a natural symphony that accompanied our journey.
The silence along with just the sound of the gushing water created a melody that seemed to resonate with the very spirit of the land.
A highlight of the trek was the ‘skywalk,’ a segment of the route comprising a series of metal bridges suspended gracefully over sections where the meandering stream intersected the trail. This architectural marvel not only added an element of thrill to our adventure but also offered panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Upon completing the trek, a breathtaking panorama unfolded — a cliff base that revealed the pièce de résistance, the Kakochang waterfall.
The waterfall – Kakochang
Three parallel cascades tumbled gracefully, creating a mesmerizing display of nature’s grandeur. The falling water produced a delicate mist of water droplets, and when combined with the gentle breeze, created a serene atmosphere, akin to a relaxing zephyr flowing through the area.
Here, at the base of the cascade, locals engaged in a unique water-centric pastime. Floating on rubber floats, they navigated the pool with ease, diving fearlessly into the crystal-clear waters and swimming back to their buoyant vessels. We couldn’t resist immersing ourselves in the pristine waters, spending close to two hours reveling in the sheer joy of this aquatic haven.
As we reluctantly left this hidden gem, the memories lingered, a testament to the precious moments spent amidst the unspoiled beauty of nature.
